Dublin is the capital and the largest city in Ireland, located in the center of the country near the mouth of the Liffey River. The city has a very rich heritage and has a medieval history dating back to the days of the Vikings. For the major part of the 19th and 20th century, Dublin remained a quiet city. However, in the past 2 decades, this unheralded city has become quite famous- both as a tourist attraction and also as a home to many migrants from all over the world. It is one the fastest growing cities in all of Europe and today has a population over 1 million. While Dublin has rich roots dating back to the Vikings, it also has modernized a lot since then. For the tourist, Dublin has lots to see and do. For the individual who wants culture, the city has many museums and theaters. Some of the most prominent literary authors came from this city including William Yeats, George Bernard and Samuel Beckett. The entire collection of James Joyce is located in the National Print Museum located in downtown. Dubliners have always enjoyed theaters and there are many plays, operas and musical production forums held each night in some part of the city. The most well known theaters include the Abbey, Gaiety, Olympia and Gate. At any time during the summer or winter, musicals and plays can be seen at one of these theaters. For those who want a glimpse into Irish Art, a visit to the Trinity College is a must. Another source of art is the Chester Beatty Library. This house has an enormous collection of prints, art works, rare books and paintings from all over the world. Some of them date back to 2700 BC. Wandering down Trinity College during the summer months, one can also view local artists with their displays. Other art galleries that may be of interest are the National Gallery, the City Arts Center, The Project, Arts Center and the Royal Hibernian Academy. However, for the tourist who is interested in more than art and museums, Dublin has a lot to offer. The night life is lively. Dublin has bars, discos, pubs and nightclubs which cater to all age groups. Being a very friendly city with very little crime, almost all the pubs and bars are packed each night. While all the bars serve the regular alcohol and snacks, for great entertainment a visit to the Temple Bar is a must. This hot spot is a mecca for tourist. Every type of party is held here and the crowd is often wild, young, sexy, attractive and inebriated. And while the bars and restaurants serve alcohol, the music scene is not far behind. Dublin has always had great musical bands and the tradition continues. After an exhausting day of shopping, one can go one of the many movie theaters in down town, Dublin. Both the Savoy and the Cineword offer a very warm and inviting atmosphere. Like most of Europe, Dublin also has it fair share of sport entertainment. There is rugby, soccer, Gaelic football, horse shows, show jumping, hurling, etc. These same parks also hold summer concerts with acts from many famous bands (e.g. U2, Madonna). And before you fly back, make sure you visit one Dublin’s shopping malls. Clothes of very design, price and fashion are available here. While it does rain a wee bit in Dublin, the warm and affectionate people more than make up for it. |
