Brussels is the largest city in Belgium and functions as the administrative capital. The city has always had a very rich heritage and is a cultural city, surrounded by historical reminders of past European glory. Belgium has a population of over one million individuals and is often referred to as the de facto capital of the European Union and is home to many administrative EU buildings, functions and commissions. NATO is also headquartered in Brussels.

Brussels is located on the shores of river Senne and today is a very modern city. It has a very mild temperate weather with mild winters and not so hot summers. It is one of the few European cities where French, Flemish, German and English are widely spoken. For the tourists there is plenty to see in Brussels. For those visiting the city for a few days one may visit the European Commission. This gigantic complex of buildings has a number of institutions and offices ranging from the European parliament to the European Commission. Other buildings not far from here that are reminders of the enormous political influence of this city include: The Brussels Stock Exchange and the Palace of Justice.

For those into arts and culture, Belgium spans all eras. From the modern buildings housing the EU institutions to the medieval times. The Grote Markt (Grand Place) is the central market square surrounded by guild houses and is one of the most visited tourist attractions. In Teurenberg Hill is located the St Michael and Gudula Cathedral. This 13the century Gothic style cathedral is often used for royal functions and state ceremonies.

For those into everything regal, a must see is the Royal Palace. This is the official palace of the King of Belgium. The palace is located in front of Brussels Park. Inside are some vivid decorations from the time of William 1 and many others.

Brussels is also very modern and one of the monuments built for Expo 58 is still as glamorous today as it was then. The Atomium is 102 meter nine steel spherical structure is a must see at night. Just a few meters away is the Mini Europe Park. Here you can see the miniaturized reproductions of the famous monuments from around Europe.

However, Brussels is more famous for its Manneken Pis, then any other status. This “little man peeing” is a bronze fountain sculpture which has captivated tourists for decades. Replicas of the Manneken Pis status are now found all over the world.

For those who want culture, Brussels is like many other European cities. Brussels has a variety of excellent theaters (La Monnaie Theater and the Brussels Theater). On any given weekday or weekend, new shows can be found performing in these buildings. To get a glimpse of the past, there are number of other museums in downtown Brussels; including the Royal Museum of Fine Art, Comic Museum and Museum of the Army. Work of many great Flemish painters like Brueghel, Robert Campin and Jacob Jordaens can be viewed inside.

And like most European cities, Brussels has a very lovely night scene. From concert halls, bars, discos and techno clubs. One can dine, wine and dance all night. For those who are worried about food, there is no need to worry. Brussels offers some of the best chocolates, waffles and yes, Brussels sprouts.
