The beautiful city of Marbella offers many sites and attractions fit for any tourist. When traveling through Marbella, Spain be sure to visit some of the following attractions. Benahavis (Andalucia Village)This majestic city, situated just 7 kilometers from the coast, offers extreme beauty and the finest cuisine. Benahavis is most popular for the food. With the highest concentration of fine cuisine in the region it draws thousands of visitors who come purely for the food. Benahavis sits near the Montemayor Castle, an 11th century Arab stronghold. Montemayor castle sits atop the highest mountain in the region. Climbing the mountain to visit the ruins of Montemayor castle is no easy feat, and will leave you exhausted. The views of the coast taken from the top of the mountain with leave you breathless, if the climb wasn’t enough. Old Town Marbella Old town Marbella offers many historic buildings as well as shops and boutiques. In the center of the old town is Orange Square, surrounded by three historic buildings. These include the town hall, the governor’s house, and the Chapel of Santiago. One of the most prominent buildings in the old town is the Church of Saint Mary, famous for what many consider the grandest church organ ever. Gibraltar Gibraltar shares a border with Spain, and is a British territory. Gibraltar houses one of the most important naval installations for the British Armed Forces. The battle of Gibraltar took place here in 1607, between Spain and a Dutch fleet. The Dutch were victorious, destroying the entire Spanish fleet. This valiant battle took place in the Bay of Gibraltar. Gibraltar is also the site of a blockade imposed by the Spanish, against the British. This blockade lasted 3 years until the British successfully destroyed the Spanish and French ships blocking the bay in 1782. Picasso Museum (Malaga, Spain) In nearby Malaga, is the birthplace of the famous Picasso. In 2003 the King and Queen of Spain inaugurated the museum. In addition to some of the best Picasso paintings on display, there is also a great selection of sketches and ceramics on display for the public. Once finished at the museum, it would complete your day to make a stop by Picasso’s birth home, Casa Natal. There are also many seasonal events happening in Marbella around the year. Here are a few to check out: Marbella Fair (Mid June) - One of the biggest fairs in Costa del Sol. This fair takes place over 6 days. Sevilla Fair (end of April / Beginning of May) - The fair begins 2 weeks after the Easter Holy week. This fair takes place over 6 days and each day starts with a parade.
