If you're looking for an island paradise like few others, consider travelling to Zante. Zante, often referred to as Zante Zakynthos, is the third largest island in the Ionian Sea, and is often heavily romanticized as a beautiful island with a history of "love, poetry, and song." Zante is an extremely popular travel destination. Although traveling there is a little more difficult than getting to most large cities on the continent, Zante is popular enough to give you several options. Zante has an airport (ZTH airport code) that is only a one hour flight from Athens, and although there is an airport, there aren't a lot of flights in or out. Most flights either come from the United Kingdom or route through Greece. For many passengers outside of London, the easiest way is to get a ticket to Athens, then grab a ticket from Athens to Zante on Olympic Airways. There are also travelers who like to take a slightly longer route because of the scenery. In this case many love to fly into Athens, and then take the ferry to Zante. Either way is good, and it's a matter of preference. Zante is full of picturesque villages, amazing churches, and all kinds of caves. There are open air cafes and taverns, top notch museums, and Zante is the home of the Caretta sea turtles, a rare animal that can't be found in any other European nation. While many people look at Spain or the Canary Islands for some great beaches, some of the best in all of Europe will be on Zante, and this island has everything. It may not have the profile of the Canary Islands, but among those who have visited the area it may rank even higher. Often times there are only around five flights going to and from Zante on any given day, which means you are limited on the times when you can arrive and leave, but those are minor inconveniences and nothing more. If you get tired of the beach or amazing caves, this island also has fantastic museums, great mountain villages, and amazing food. The people of Zante are renowned for their hospitality, and for that extra little touch of culture listen to the Zakynthian form of chanting at the many monasteries in the area. Zante is a fantastic destination to visit and if you want to make the trip, don't let the limited number of flights discourage you. It's not hard to get to Zante, and the destination makes any mild inconveniences caused by getting there well worth the pay off. There are a half dozen airlines that offer flights to Zante, so just look around for the best ticket deal and figure out when you're going to leave. Zante is a fantastic destination, and a place you should definitely visit in your travels. |
