Tunis is not nearly as well traveled as many other Mediterranean cities, in part because there aren't the special beaches or archaeological sites that attract visitors to many other cities. While Tunis doesn't have the same tourist attractions as many other Mediterranean cities, this also allows Tunis a relaxed "untouched" feeling that many travelers fully appreciate. Tunis doesn't have the obvious tourist traps of other locations, but there are plenty of sites worth seeing in this hidden African gem. Not only are the ruins of Carthage close by and easy to access, but in Tunis itself there are several landmarks worth seeing. In this city of under 700,000 people, one of the first places you will want to see is the Zitouna Mosque. The Zitouna Mosque is the largest mosque in all of Tunisia, and is over 1100 years old. As with many Islamic holy sites, only Muslims may enter the mosque itself, but non-Muslim visitors may visit the courtyard as long as they are respectful and modestly dressed. Even though many cities in Northern Africa will have a souq, the souq in Tunis is popular because it is widely viewed as one of the most authentic and hassle-free in not only the country of Tunisia, but also all of Africa. If you're looking for a decent museum, then the Bardo Museum is one of the best that you will find in Tunis, and is a landmark you should not miss. This Tunis landmark is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. November through April, or 9-5 May through October. This Museum is housed in what was once the palace of an Ottoman ruler, the museum is also famous for its impressive and large collection of Roman mosaics. The wide variety of cultures housed here makes for an extensive and impressive collection. The Cathedral of St. Vincent de Paul is a Roman Catholic cathedral that is also very much worth seeing. St. Vincent was a priest sold into slavery who was later freed and became renown for his work in helping slaves in the area. This church has a unique mix of styles: Moor, Gothic, and Byzantine all included. There are also two quality gates in Tunis worth seeing: the "Bab el Bahr" and the "Bab el Khadra." These gates are fantastic archaeological wonders that give the city an enormous amount of personality and character. There are many great Tunis landmarks to visit, and this article certainly isn't a complete list, but if you visit all the landmarks mentioned here you're going to get a great taste of Tunis and have a full and enjoyable vacation.
