Athens – The World’s Oldest City

Travel to Athens the World’s oldest city and the capital and largest city of Greece, Athens stands out among the world’s top travel destination spots. Its 3,400 year history offers its visitors a delight to enjoy and its bustling and cosmopolitan metropolis dominates the economic, political, industrial, financial and cultural life of the entire country of Greece. Rated as an alpha world city, you are in for a big treat if you do decide to hop on that airplane and spend your vacation time here. Known as a classical center for arts, philosophy and learning and home to Plato and Aristotle, Athens is indeed the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy.

The classical era atmosphere has however not faded and is still evident in the city. There are a number of ancient monuments and works of art that can be enjoyed in addition to the amazing list of beaches, festivals and museums that will keep you occupied throughout your stay here. Athens beaches are rated among the blue flags of Europe with quality swimming water, trained lifeguards, safe coast passages and pets supervision on the beach. What more could you want out of a beach? The list of Athens beaches that fit the Blue Flags of Europe are enough to keep you coming year after year.

One of these beaches is the Asterial Sea Side. This is the classical beach in Attica with white recliners, white umbrellas and changing rooms similar to those on Miami Beach. The waiters even get to bring you your drinks right on the beach as you enjoy the white sand. There are hot showers and lockers to keep your valuables safe as you enjoy the beach to the full. If you have children or you are a big child yourself, you will also get to enjoy the elegant super water park with imaginative inflatable constructions. There is also a private beach area for complete comfort and privacy. Other beaches you might want to pay a visit are the Varkiza beach, 27 kilometers from Athens city center, the Vouliagmeni beach which is 23 kilometers from Athens center, the Cape Sounion, 68 kilometers from Athens where you get to enjoy a sandy beach with taverns and cafes in close proximity. There is also the Voula beach which is only 17 kilometers away from center of Athens and has clean and sandy beach where you get to enjoy playing volleyball and tennis. Others are Schinias, Loutsa and Kokkino Limanaki all less than 50 kilometers away from the center of Athens. If you are a wind surfer, then I recommend the Schinias, where the wind never goes south. The Loutsa is a great place to enjoy a night on the beach.

From the city of Athens, get to enjoy other popular destinations surrounding the city including the nearby cities like Budapest and Vienna. Within Athens, get to enjoy the splendid Temple of Poseidon constructed in 600 BC rising out of the Aegean just 65 kilometers away at Cape Sounion. An hour from the temple, get to enjoy the free public beaches in the vicinity. The World’s oldest city indeed has a lot to offer and airfare to Athens is very reasonably priced.
