A beautiful backdrop and a rich history, along with the sunshine have made Malaga one of Spain’s top tourist attractions. There is also an interesting mixture of history and architecture where one dominant force would create a building that was then redone by the new conquering regimes. The Alcazaba, or the King’s Castle actually originated with the Moors. There are several lovely fountains and gardens to be seen. The towers at the Alcazaba are connected by ducts. The Cathedral was built over the Mosque that had been built by the Moors. There are also plenty of Renaissance type buildings across the entire area. Because the history was so vast, there is a little piece of history from all who have inhabited the area. There are many museums, including the Picasso Museum, The Buenavista Palace, The Museum of Popular Arts and Customs, and the Diocesal Museum. As one can imagine, art is a very big part of the area’s history and that is reflected by the magnificent works on display at the many museums. Pablo Picasso was born in the city and in the Plaza De La Merced is the home where Picasso was born. There are also many magnificently beautiful parks in Malaga. It would be a shame to pass up seeing some of the natural and cultivated beauty on display. Some of the best parks are; de Picasso, Puerta Oscura, de Pedro Luis Alanzo and de la Consula. The nightlife in Malaga is pretty traditional, although there are some newer places that have become favorites of the young people. In the traditional and neighborhood taverns, authentic cuisine is often enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. It may make it worth it just to taste some authentic food from the area. As is typical for the region, religion is a big part of the history and culture, even today. Religious festivals are very common in Malaga as well as other cities in the region. Easter is a holiday with great significance with the people of the area and there are a number of parades and festivities that go along with it. There are also some quaint traditions and traditional breads and sweets that tourists love. The Corpus Christi Celebrations which take place near Malaga go on for four days. The Spaniards even have their own version of April Fools Day which is held December 28th. The cuisine near the seaside in Malaga is mainly light. As one could expect, a lot of fish and shrimp are eaten. Closer to the mountain ranges, however, there is more game foods served as well as the traditional and famous Robo De Toro a la Rondena. And yes, that is actually Bulls tail. The area is also known for sausages. There are also excursion tickets available to places nearby the city of Malaga which offer different sights, sounds and foods to visitors. The excursions themselves are of interest, and of course, the scenery is exquisite. Airfare to Malaga is very reasonable so there is plenty to do and experience in the beautiful Malaga on the coast of Spain. |
